Aluminium and Iron salts (AlFe) REACH Consortium

The manufacturers, importers, only representatives of Aluminium salts, Iron salts and Sodium Aluminate joined efforts for their REACH compliance activities and have transferred on February 13th 2009 their Aluminium and Iron salts (AlFe) REACH consortium to ReachCentrum for Secretariat activities.

Through the AlFe REACH Consortium, the manufacturers, importers and only representatives have decided to join efforts to prepare consistent registration dossiers, building on the experience gained during the OECD/HPV program for Iron salts and pre-OECD/HPV program for Aluminium salts. The project management and secretariat of the consortium is handled by ReachCentrum.

The AlFe consortium is divided into 3 sub-consortia:

  1. Aluminium (Al) salts sub-consortium
  2. Iron (Fe) salts sub-consortium
  3. Sodium aluminate (SodAl) sub-consortium

The Lead registrants are:

  • Kemira Oyj for the Fe salts
  • Kemira Oyj for the Al salts
  • Remondis GmbH for the sodium aluminate (SodAl)

Membership

Manufacturers/ importers/ only representatives as defined in the REACH Regulation of the substance on its own, in preparations or in articles and who are subject to the registration requirements pursuant to the REACH Regulation, or Affiliates thereof and who participate in the consortium.

Membership is open to any applicant fulfilling the membership criteria. The AlFe consortium is open to any European companies manufacturing the above mentioned substances as well as importers of the above mentioned substances. All manufacturers/importers or only representatives, having data important for the dossier compilation are invited to contact the consortium secretariat to discuss access to the data.

C&L inventory

In order to agree a common C&L entry for substances in the EU market, the consortium recommends any manufacturers, importers or downstream users of aluminium or iron salts to consult the C&L recommendation of the Joint Submission. The Joint C&L is already publicly available at the ECHA Chem dissemination website, and also ticked as Joint Submission in the C&L database.

The list of ALFE substances are available on the Consortium website and the C&L recommendations are posted in the SIEF Communication tool. Out of these, only iron sulfate (EC 231-753-5, CAS 7720-78-8) has a harmonized EU classification entry. All other substances are self-classified based on the joint dataset of the Consortium.

The C&L of the Joint Submission is based on the substance identity profile agreed in the ALFE REACH Consortium for a typical pure mono-constituent substance as produced. As the form, composition and impurities of the substance may vary case by case, various C&Ls may still remain for a substance on the market. Sometimes companies may also interpret the studies differently, or have access to different studies. In case of justified deviations, companies are recommended to document their arguments for using another C&L.
